Spanish project to deliver 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen by 2026
Up to 200,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen will be produced in Spain by 2026 through the HyDeal Espana project, Thierry Lepercq, chairman of the joint venture and spokesperson for HyDeal Ambition, told ICIS.
The scale of the project, involving 9.5GW of solar PV capacity and 7.4GW of electrolysis capacity development by 2030, is yet another example of Spain being one of the most attractive countries in the world for green hydrogen developments.
HyDeal Espana seeks to deliver competitive renewable hydrogen to an industrial complex in Asturias from facilities based in northern Spain, according to a joint statement made this week by Spanish grid operator Enagas and companies including Arcelor Mittal and Grupo Fertiberia.
The first stage of the project will see the production of 55,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen in 2025, before reaching 200,000 tonnes (roughly 7.9TWh/H2) in 2026.
This would account for 2% of the European Commission’s target of 10m tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030. This will later be followed by another step in 2028, although production details are not yet available.
HyDeal Espana is the first industrial implementation of the HyDeal Ambition platform, launched last year with the aim of delivering green hydrogen across Europe at €1.5/kg – including transmission and storage – by 2030.
Comparatively, ICIS hydrogen pricing information shows that producing electrolytic hydrogen with power purchased from the German OTC market for delivery in 2025 would cost €6.23/kg H2 at higher heating value based on 17 February data.
