Japan’s chemical exports rise 5.8% in Jan, overall shipments up 9.6%
Japan’s chemical exports rose by 5.8% year on year to yen (Y) 834bn in January, supporting the overall growth in shipments abroad, official data showed on Thursday.
Exports of organic chemicals rose by 21.3% year on year to Y169.1bn in January while shipments of plastic materials were down by 4% at Y215.7bn, according to Ministry of Finance (MOF) data.
On a volume basis, exports of plastic materials were down by 20.6% year on year in January at 371,911 tonnes in January.
Japan’s overall exports rose by 9.6% year on year to Y6.33 trillion in January, while imports rose by 39.6% to Y8.52tr.
This resulted in a trade deficit of Y2.19tr in January, compared with a deficit of Y327.1bn in January 2021.
Exports shipments to the US were up by 11.5%.
Japan’s overall exports to southeast Asia rose by 15.5% year on year in January.
